Wings Over Houston

The Wings Over Houston Air Show was held at Ellington Field in Houston Oct. 21-22,
2006. The show, capped off by the Thunderbirds, saw the pyro team take to a very
wet and muddy field. Shooter-In-Charge Chris Rainey asked if I could bring a team
down to perform the bomb shots, strafes, wall, etc……you know, what we do best. We
assembled a team (listed below) and all headed to Houston.
We arrived at our hotel
and prepared to attend the Friday mixer held just down the street at the Hilton
Hotel. Very nice event, attended by most of the air show participants, with
honored guests Archie Donahue and "Tex" Hill.
Following the reception,
we retreated to our customary "tail-gating" party in the parking lot of the hotel.
EOD Lead David Linebarger used this opportunity to present a few CAF awards.
Presented with a CAF Letter of Commendation were Col. Sandy Farris and
Col. Christi Shull. Presented with the Silver Magnolia Award were
Col. Richard Shull and Col. Rodney Robinson.
The Tora portion of the show was handled by 4-6 members of Tora Bomb Squad including
Rich Adams and Collie Grey. The rest of the show was portioned out and our gang
received the lion's share of the work load. We were up to it.
We had 4 spreads of
8 regular shots with a single napalm shot on each. Spreads were shot by Gena and
David, Joe, Katie and Martin, Sandy and Sharon and Frank and Patti. David and
Jean Marie did the strafes and Christi had a wall each day. June and Lois set up
two bomb spreads in assisting Dave Wood and his gang.
Our gas and cord were increased
on Sunday so everything really lit up. Richard ran our side of the field and I
served as field communication for our spreads. All in all, the show ran smooth
and we were told by many that our efforts were not only appreciated but vital to
the success of this years show.
